Robert Sheahan returned to the pool where he had learned to swim as a child. Years after receiving two lungs and a liver in one operation, the man from Askeaton, Ireland, was rebuilding strength with coach Leona Blackwell. In June 2026, he won three swimming gold medals for Ireland at the European Transplant Games in the Netherlands.

A new interview published by the Limerick Post on November 1 looks back at the recovery behind those medals. Born with cystic fibrosis, Sheahan received his transplant in 2019. He described relearning to walk, needing a feeding tube, and spending long periods isolated to avoid infection. Another serious illness in 2024 brought intensive care and more rehabilitation. His return to swimming came through recovery, setbacks, and support—not one uncomplicated leap from surgery to success.

The Games’ organizers also shared his story, describing the milestone of no longer needing his oxygen equipment. His first gold in June coincided with his birthday and transplant anniversary. Today, Sheahan wants others to understand what organ donation can make possible. He credits his donor and their family with giving him the chance to build a fulfilling life.
