Storm jumped onto Sandra Donally’s bed shortly after midnight and refused to settle. Sandra, who is deaf, initially thought her husband Gary had gone to the bathroom. But the cockapoo remained upright, staring toward the landing. When Sandra checked, she found Gary unconscious at the bottom of the stairs.
Sandra called their nearby son, and paramedics took Gary to Royal Stoke Hospital. After reconstructive surgery and 24 days in hospital, he returned home in August. Sandra believes Storm’s alert saved his life: without it, she might not have discovered him until their usual morning wake-up. The family’s account appeared in the Express & Star on October 26 and was shared by Good News Network on November 1; the fall did not happen this week.
Storm had already made home and daily outings feel different for Sandra. After losing her hearing in 2017, she was partnered with the dog in 2024. She says she now feels more comfortable starting conversations and has met other dog owners at their local park. Gary’s return home added another chapter to a partnership Sandra already described as helping her enjoy life again.
