In Virginia, a father's idea has grown into a community effort giving single mothers reliable transportation and greater independence.
A broken-down car can mean missed work, school appointments, and everyday opportunities. In Virginia, Eddie Brown and a group of high school students are helping families overcome those obstacles.
Brown and his wife, Ginny, founded Giving Words, a nonprofit supporting single mothers. When their son mentioned that his automotive technology class needed vehicles to practice repairs, Brown saw an opportunity to connect learning with kindness.
Students at Louisa County High School began repairing donated vehicles for mothers who needed dependable transportation.
The wider Giving Words program has since provided more than 60 vehicles, with students helping restore many of them.
For mothers like Shannon Bruster, who had been living in her car with her young son, receiving a reliable vehicle offered a chance to regain stability.
The students gain practical skills while seeing firsthand how their work changes lives.
