Barbara went to the gym to support a friend. When her friend stopped attending, she kept going—and grew closer to Fred, a former Army physical training instructor who coached her at New Oscott Retirement Village.
Both had lost their spouses and neither expected another relationship. Friendship grew through regular workouts, conversation, and laughter. Now they exercise three times a week, garden together, play games, and dance when music comes on. They have also taken their first vacation as a couple.
They keep separate apartments while sharing much of their daily lives. Their families support the relationship, too. As Barbara’s daughters told her: “If you’re happy, Mum, that’s all we want.” For Barbara and Fred, companionship has become part of the everyday again.
