A pickup truck went over an embankment at Nelson’s Chahko Mika Mall and began sinking in Kootenay Lake on October 31. A woman was alone inside. Three bystanders entered the water and pulled her to safety, according to Nelson police.

Several people called 911 shortly after 1 p.m. By the time police officers, firefighters, and paramedics arrived, the driver was already on shore and out of danger. Paramedics assessed her and released her at the scene without taking her to the hospital.

A towing company later recovered the submerged truck. Police credited the three people who intervened, while investigators continued examining what caused the crash. The confirmed outcome was a welcome one: the woman was safely out of the water and needed no hospital transport.
