A security-camera alert showed Maren and David Douglass a student waiting at the edge of their Florida driveway. It happened again the next morning. Rather than ask her to leave, the teachers ordered a bench and assembled it over the weekend.
When she discovered it, the camera caught her little jumps of joy. A handwritten thank-you followed: she no longer had to sit among dirt and bugs. The couple became the “Bench People,” and their young neighbor became “Bus Kid.”
Then they added a small lending library and an umbrella for rainy mornings. Other neighborhood children began borrowing books, too. The student later brought the couple two homemade cookies—a small thank-you for a welcome that had changed her mornings.
